Yamaha Named Strongest Motorcycle Brand of 2012 by Harris Poll

Yamaha edged out Harley-Davidson as the strongest motorcycle brand in the U.S. for 2012, according to the Harris Poll EquiTrend study of the country’s healthiest brands.

The study produces a score for each brand measuring its brand equity, customer connection and overall buzz.

Each consumer was asked to rate 40 randomly selected brands. In the motorcycle category, consumers evaluated five brands: Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki.

Improvements felt by Hayden and Rossi

The opening round of the 2012 MotoGP season continued this evening (Friday), with the second and third free practice sessions taking place at Qatar’s Losail International Circuit. Although the area was buffeted by fairly strong winds for much of the day, the surface grip improved compared to Thursday night’s dusty conditions, forcing the riders and their teams to adapt their set-ups accordingly.

Both Nicky Hayden, seventh at the end, and Valentino Rossi improved their performances, with the Italian in particular working with the hard tyre, consistently lowering his times with the race set-up. Only in the final exit did he mount a softer tyre, with which he posted the eighth-best time of the day.

Nicky Hayden:
“As the track is cleaning up, we’re getting more grip, but in a way that’s hurting us since I’m also getting more chatter. When that happens, I can’t keep my lean angle, and I run wide, especially in the flat corners. We tried some different springs but haven’t found the right solution yet. Chatter is so strange and inconsistent sometimes, but we’ll have a look at the data and do our best to sort it out. My pace isn’t great, but although I’m not thrilled with how the day went, the bike is certainly doing well on top speed, which is going to be important in the race.”

Valentino Rossi:
“Today went pretty well, and I’d say that the last session was the best. The position is nothing fantastic, but on the positive side, I’m very consistent with the hard tyre. The front of the bike is giving more feedback, so I can push more, which is very important, and the bike is very fast at the end of the straight. The understeer is still there, but now I think we have a place from which to work. We hope to improve two or three small things with the setting for tomorrow, and we’ll try to qualify on the second row.”

Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden talk about Stefan Bradl

During last week’s Ducati & Ferrari Wrooom event, Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden has time to comment on the 2011 Moto2 champion Stefan Bradl who will be debuting in MotoGP this season.

Bradl who tested the LCR Honda 800cc at Valencia, will finally be getting the chance to test for the first time his new 2012 bike, the RC213V in the upcoming Sepang tests, and Rossi talking about the German champion said, “Bradl will have to adapt to MotoGP in his first year, but he is a very intelligent rider and he’ll show his talent” and the added jokingly “hopefully he’ll be slower than I am.”

While Ducati team mate Nicky Hayden talked about his debut in MotoGP back in 2003, saying that Bradl will adapt easily considering that he comes from the GP paddock, “When I arrived in GP racing in 2003 I was very young and didn’t have have any experience at an international level. He [Bradl] comes from the paddock, knows the tracks and the people and this will help him. It’s always good to have new riders in MotoGP and I’m curious to see how they’ll fare. It’s also important to have a German rider as MotoGP is very popular in Germany and at the Sachsenring circuit there’s always a lot of fans, so I’m happy to go back there.”

Bradl has already stated his objectives for the 2012 season, “I’d like to close the first half of the season between 7th and 9th and then in the top five. My long term goal is the title and that would be the top.

Harley-Davidson, often abbreviated H-D or Harley, is an American motorcycle manufacturer. Founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the first decade of the 20th century, it was one of two major American motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression. Harley-Davidson also survived a period of poor quality control and competition from Japanese manufacturers.

Introduced in 1957, the Sportster family were conceived as racing motorcycles, and were popular on dirt and flat-track race courses through the 1960s and 1970s. Smaller and lighter than the other Harley models, contemporary Sportsters make use of 883 cc or 1,200 cc Evolution engines and, though often modified, remain similar in appearance to their racing ancestors.

Up until the 2003 model year, the engine on the Sportster was rigidly mounted to the frame. The 2004 Sportster received a new frame accommodating a rubber-mounted engine. Although this made the bike heavier and reduced the available lean angle, it reduced the amount of vibration transmitted to the frame and the rider. The rubber mounted engine provides a significantly smoother ride for rider and passenger, allowing longer trips.

Retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew 10.9 percent

Retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew 10.9 percent worldwide in the fourth quarter compared to the prior-year period, including an 11.8 percent increase in the U.S. For the full year 2011, new Harley-Davidson motorcycle retail sales rose 5.9 percent worldwide and 5.8 percent in the U.S.

On a segment basis, full-year operating income from Motorcycles and Related Products grew 48.2 percent on higher shipment volume and operating margin improvement, while operating income from Financial Services grew 47.8 percent on continued improvement in credit performance, compared to 2010.

“Our improved performance in 2011 is the result of the tremendous efforts of all of our employees, dealers and suppliers,” said Keith Wandell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc.

“Harley-Davidson is all about fulfilling dreams through remarkable motorcycles and extraordinary customer experiences. In 2011 we made strong progress at transforming our business to be more agile and effective than ever at exceeding customer expectations,” Wandell said. “The changes underway across the organization will enable Harley-Davidson to be world class and customer led like never before, with shorter product development lead times, flexible manufacturing and an unmatched premium retail experience.

Rossi: “Ducati did a good job in a just a short time”

Ducati Corse Technical Director Filippo Preziosi followed the team’s work from the garage as Valentino Rossi progressed step by step, improving his lap times each outing before finishing with the fifth fastest time, .735 seconds behind that of Jorge Lorenzo.

Nicky Hayden also began working on the setup of the GP12, although his physical condition was still affected by his injury to his left scapula. The American finished the day tenth, having completed 25 laps.

Valentino Rossi 2’02.392 (30 laps)
“I’m happy because first impressions are important, and already in the first few laps, I could tell that I like the bike. Ducati did a good job in a just a short time. The bike is beautiful, but more importantly, it’s nice to ride. The riding position has improved a lot, and it’s better on braking and corner entry. I can brake like I want to and take the lines that I like, and I feel comfortable in general. I was able to ride well and not make mistakes, and there’s a reason for that. It means that the bike can be ridden. It’s more agile in change of direction, and it wheelies much less.”

”We’re 7 tenths back today, and of course there’s still a lot of work to do before we can win. We have to improve in some areas: acceleration, electronics, power delivery and setup. I’d say we’ll be able to make a more accurate assessment at the end of the test, because let’s remember, the bike is just 40 days old. To leave here a second back from the top would be okay because anyway, we know that there’s still much more to be done. But one of the best things from today is that the bike reacts well to changes. That enabled us to drop one or two tenths every outing, which means further progress should be possible.”
